FLAPPERS: A TRANSFORMATION
Fine art portrait series — a study of transformation
A portrait is not made in the camera — it is made on both sides of the lens.
This work did not begin with the idea of a costumed shoot, but with a conversation. I have long been interested not in how a person looks, but in what happens to them in the moment they allow themselves to become someone else — even for a few hours, even through an image invented a hundred years ago.
The 1920s gave the world a woman who refused to stay silent and obedient. She danced not because it was easy, but because there was a choice — to keep being afraid, or to start living differently.
We worked together — through dialogue, observation, and the search for the right gesture and gaze — so that this image would stop being a costume and become a state of being.
Whether it succeeded is for the viewer to judge.
